Sacred Pauses: The Practice of Living Mindfully
A Weekend Retreat
facilitated by Macrina Wiederkehr and Velma Frye
November 12-14, 2010 at
St. Scholastica Retreat Center, Fort Smith, Arkansas

S
acred Pauses is an invitation to the practice of moving through the hours of the day with
greater mindfulness. The mystical possibilities of every moment are revealed to us in our intentional
pauses. There are times when we are startled into pausing because grace takes hold of us in surprising
and unexpected ways. More often, though, we need to practice pausing. Our pauses, then, become a way
of living awake right in the midst of our daily work. As we practice living awake we slowly begin to see the
holiness of so many things that remain hidden when we hurry through the hours.

In this feast of poetry and song, story, prayer and ritual you will be offered the medicine
of deep listening along with the healing balm of silence. Themes from Macrina’s book, Seven
Sacred Pauses, along with chants and songs from Velma’s accompanying CD will be used.

Macrina Wiederkehr is a well known author and retreat leader on the subject of
spiritual formation. She lives a monastic life in the Benedictine community of
St. Scholastica in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Writing and retreat ministry have become a part of her evolving call.
In addition to
Seven Sacred Pauses, she is the author of six other books, among
them being
A Tree Full of Angels: finding the holy in the ordinary.

Velma Frye is a multi-instrumentalist andvocalist with a strong background in classical and
popular styles. She has performed nine times on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and
in 2006 went on a 6-college tour with Garrison as his pianist and vocal duet partner.
While continuing to perform professionally and teach piano, Velma leads weekly Singing Circles for
women and for mixed chorus. She leads MusicSpirit groups and seasonal ceremonies, where people
come together to sing songs with positive, universal messages about life, love, and nature. These
community-building skills are now featured in workshops and conferences.

Women and Men In Time:
A Retreat
Dates: to be announced

Facilitated by
NORINE CARDEA, SUSAN CERULEAN
and VELMA FRYE

We invite you to devote a few days to explore what is happening at this time on the Earth, at this time of the year, and at this time in your life. You will be guided by three experienced leaders -- a therapist, a writer, and a singer -- as you take this time in the company of supportive women and men.

Using stories, ritual, and incisive therapeutic tools,
Norine Cardea offers a framework for hope and courage. Explore the unique gifts that you alone bring to our world, and access the clarity and strength to live your purpose more fully. When we are safe and truly seen, profound change is always possible.

Naturalist and writer
Susan Cerulean guides you to deepen and integrate your work with Norine. Writing exercises help retrieve the stories you hold in your own body. On the beautiful grounds of St. Francis Springs Prayer Center, you will slow down and sharpen your senses, learning from the bioregion that holds us.

Woven throughout our time together,
Velma Frye will lead sacred songs and chants, drawing from music she has composed, others’ music, and chants we will improvise in the present moment. Singing spiritually inclusive lyrics, sacred pauses will be offered at various times: before dawn, dawn, mid-morning, noon, late afternoon, sunset, after dark.
